How Greystone Construction tapped into SME Grants to grow

Published: 18 July 2025

Greystone Construction Ltd, a civil engineering and construction firm headquartered in West Bromwich, has steadily expanded its footprint across the Midlands and beyond, working with clients such as McLaren Construction, Glencar, and Gallagher Group. As the business grew, so did the need to offer a more comprehensive service package to remain competitive when tendering for contracts.

One operational barrier was the reliance on outsourced concrete pumping, which brought both financial strain and logistical inefficiencies, costing the business thousands per month and risking delays and potential penalties on projects.

To overcome this, Greystone began investing in its own concrete pumping fleet. The company purchased its first pump independently in late 2023. Shortly after, they were introduced to the SME Grants programme offered by the Business Growth West Midlands Sandwell.

With the support of the grant, Greystone acquired its second pump in early 2024, followed by a third purchase a few months later, both made possible through SME grant funding. As Managing Director Clive Owen shared, “Two of the concrete pumps were purchased with the assistance of awarded SME Grants by the Sandwell Business Growth Team.”

These investments have not only boosted profitability and operational control but have also unlocked new contracts and contributed directly to job creation. Five new roles have been added in the local area, with further growth supported with the potential of up to 30 additional jobs.
Greystone’s experience highlights how targeted funding and strategic investment can address key business challenges, unlock growth, and deliver real impact in local communities.
