People buy from people

One thing stands out in business, people buy from people. Whether you’re just starting out or growing, talking to people is essential.
A few years ago I needed a home office, so like many people I spent hours researching online, but in the end, I chose a carpenter I knew from the gym. I trusted him, his work and reputation, and that trust gave me confidence in the price and quality. The same applies in aspects of business, conversations build trust, and trust leads to opportunities (in fact 70% of this carpenter’s work comes from people at the gym!).
Starting a business can feel lonely, but success comes from engaging with others. This can be done through social media, business networking groups, or just chance encounters. By talking to people you gain knowledge, support, and importantly connections.
Many businesses look for marketing solutions such as flyers and adverts, but real value lies in people, having conversations, giving advice, sharing experiences, and building relationships. A quote I often use is “there is no such thing as luck, luck is the intersection between planning and opportunity” and opportunity comes from these conversations.
Social media has made this linking with people easier. Facebook and LinkedIn groups connect people with common interests, leading to real-world opportunities. How often do you see someone asking for a recommendation online with people recommending companies or even themselves? These conversations naturally build trust, leading directly to work.
Most important thing, talk to people. Many new business owners worry about making the perfect introduction or having a flawless pitch, but that’s not what matters. Having real genuine conversations matters, possibly at an event, online, or even down the pub, these help build relationships.
You don’t have to be the loudest or most confident or even the most experienced; you just need to be you. Listen, engage, and be part of the conversation.
