Welding specialist moves into new markets

Published: 31 March 2025

Metal Assemblies Ltd, a West Bromwich-based pressing and welding specialist, is taking bold steps to diversify beyond the automotive industry after joining the Supply Chain Transition (SCT) programme.

Operating since 1955, the company employs more than 130 staff in its 75,000 sq ft facility, producing stampings and assemblies for global automotive brands including Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and BMW. However, with the sector facing ongoing uncertainty, the business wanted to explore new opportunities in other industries.

Why they joined the programme

Newly appointed Business Development Manager, Lorraine Beattie, recognised the potential of the Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) project and encouraged the business to join the SCT programme in 2024. “I saw the need for Metal Assemblies to diversify,” Lorraine explained. “The automotive industry suffers from highs and lows, and we needed to fill those voids.”

What they gained

Through one-to-one engagement with a supply chain expert, Metal Assemblies developed a clearer understanding of how its skills in pressing and welding could support the VLR and Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) markets. A tailored roadmap helped them identify their strengths, address barriers, and plan the next steps in their diversification journey.

“The programme was enlightening and the one-to-one sessions were invaluable,” said Lorraine. “It gave us a better understanding of these markets and how we could contribute to key customers.”

Positive results

The business is already seeing opportunities emerge. Metal Assemblies has been invited to provide quotations for seat frames for the Coventry VLR project, and has reconnected with major customer Unipart at a Meet the Buyer event.

Lorraine added: “The programme has helped us change our mindset on diversification. We now have a clear direction for moving forward, and we’re looking to continue making connections with VLR and LEV markets. We want key customers to know we are here in the region and ready to help.”

Looking ahead

Metal Assemblies plans to recruit and upskill staff to meet future demand, and is working with Aston University on ways to offer more carbon-neutral products.

Lorraine concluded: “I would certainly recommend this programme to other SMEs. It is invaluable for gaining knowledge on new markets and supply chain opportunities, and it has shown us what other regional businesses are doing. The West Midlands has a lot to offer in manufacturing, and working together will help us all grow.”
