Your opportunity to grow your business in thriving new sectors

Published: 14 March 2025

By Emma Sheridan, Newable

With the start of new beginnings, businesses may want to explore ways to pivot and adapt to changing market demands for long-term success and sustainability.

Transitioning into new supply chain sectors is an effective strategy for driving growth and scaling your business operations this year. To complement this ambition, we have launched the Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM) Supply Chain Transition programme, which is on a mission to empower SMEs in the West Midlands with a free package of support to tap into new supply chain prospects.

This programme targets dynamic sectors in Health and Med Tech, Manufacture of Future Housing and Smart Energy Systems. Whether you’re already operating in these sectors or looking to break into them, these industries represent the future of business—and we are looking for local suppliers like you.

The sectors of the future: where opportunity awaits

The world is forever changing, and businesses that adapt to emerging trends thrive. The programme focuses on three sectors with huge growth potential and is designed to propel businesses towards securing new supply chain orders in these markets:

Health and Med Tech Supply Chain

The fusion of Health Tech and Med Tech has created a dynamic ecosystem that caters to both physical medical devices and software-based health solutions.

The West Midlands is poised to revolutionise the sector with cutting-edge Health & Med Tech solutions and outlines an opportunity to increase this sector by an additional £400 million to £430 million by 2030.

This growth is expected to create between 5,300 and 5,900 new jobs and represents strong potential for all those involved in the local Health & Med Tech supply chain.

Future Housing Supply Chain

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has set an ambitious target of building 215,000 new homes by 2031. This target aims to meet future housing and economic needs while providing good-quality, affordable housing for local residents.

The region is committed to building homes that are energy-efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly. This suggests that a significant portion of the 215,000 homes will need to incorporate many elements of future housing which could represent strong growth potential for all those involved in the local future housing supply chain.

Smart Energy Systems Supply Chain

The smart energy systems market in the West Midlands is expected to experience significant growth over the next three years. This growth is being driven by strategic initiatives, investment and innovation, public-private partnerships, and economic and environmental goals.

The region is home to significant clean-tech research hubs which are driving innovation and attracting investment in smart energy solutions. Partnerships with key players in the region are driving the development and implementation of smart energy projects.

New supply chain sectors: the benefits to boost growth

Diversifying your supply chain can strengthen a company’s competitiveness and sustainability in an ever-changing marketplace. By sourcing and procuring materials and other items from several different suppliers, you can reduce the risk of relying solely on one.

The benefits include:
-    Diversification of risk
-    Access to new customers
-    Innovation and competitive edge
-    Revenue growth
-    Strategic partnerships
-    Adaptability and resilience

Sourcing from multiple suppliers in different industries or locations helps a business better adapt to unexpected challenges. Diversification can also foster innovation, improve cost efficiency, make a business more resilient and provide access to new markets and technologies.

A supply chain is the lifeline of any business, connecting all the moving parts involved in bringing a product to market. Understanding and managing this network is essential for businesses to stay competitive in today’s global marketplace.
