How to make the most of networking opportunities

Published: 26 February 2025

With both in-person and online events on offer, the West Midlands Business Festival is the perfect chance to grow your network, learn from industry leaders, and raise your business profile. Here are five practical tips to help you make the most of networking opportunities.

1. Do your homework

Before attending any event—whether in person or online—take the time to research the agenda and speakers. Knowing who will be there and what topics will be discussed can help you identify key people you want to connect with. For larger events make a list of sessions you don’t want to miss and prepare a few conversation starters or questions based on the event themes.

Team tip: “For online events, check if there are networking breakouts or chat features where you can introduce yourself to other attendees. For in-person events, bring business cards or prepare a digital contact card to share easily.” Jay Lad, BGWM Events Manager

2. Set clear goals

What do you want to achieve from attending the festival? Are you looking to find new clients, partners, or suppliers? Or are you hoping to gain insights into a particular industry? Setting clear objectives will help you stay focused and make the most of your time.

Team tip: “Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, as events are a great way to pick up new followers and start new conversations. Many virtual networking sessions encourage attendees to connect on LinkedIn; make a lasting impression with a strong profile.” Gurdas Singh, BGWM Marketing Manager

3. Practice your pitch

Networking isn’t just about handing out business cards—it’s about meaningful conversations. Prepare a short pitch that clearly explains who you are, what your business does, and what you’re looking for. This will help you communicate effectively and make a strong impression.

Team tip: “You should adapt your pitch for different situations. For example, your approach at a roundtable may be different from a casual networking session. Consider asking questions at Q&As to get your name out there too.” Kirstie Blakeman, BGWM Strategic Communications Manager

4. Engage on social media

Use social media to your advantage before, during, and after events. Follow the West Midlands Business Festival on LinkedIn, Facebook and X and use the event hashtag #WMBF2025 to join the conversation. This can help you connect with other attendees and keep up with event highlights.

Team tip: “Share your own insights or key takeaways from the sessions you attend. Tag the festival and relevant speakers as well as using event hashtags (for the festival it's #WMBF25) to increase your visibility and encourage others to connect with you.” Jack Connolly, BGWM Marketing Executive

5. Follow up

Networking doesn’t end when the event does. Take the time to follow up with the people you meet, whether it’s through LinkedIn, email, or a quick message. Mention something specific from your conversation to make your follow-up more personal and meaningful.

Team tip: “For online events, consider sending a thank-you message to the event organisers or speakers. This small gesture can help you stand out and build lasting connections.” Claira Smith-Wilson, BGWM Events Executive
