Unlocking business resilience through the circular economy

Published: 02 July 2026

In today’s challenging economic landscape, businesses are under increasing pressure to cut costs, secure supply chains and meet sustainability targets. The circular economy offers a practical, proven way to do all three, and organisations across the West Midlands are already taking advantage through a range of support available through the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The West Midlands Resource Reuse Network (WMRRN) is at the heart of this shift, helping businesses identify opportunities to reduce waste, reuse materials and keep valuable resources circulating in local supply chains.

The WMCA has also developed a Circular Economy Literacy Training course which introduces the circular economy and how it can help your business. Accredited by the CPD service, the self-guided course consists of three modules:

  • Introduction to circular economy
  • Circular economy opportunities
  • Implementing the circular economy in your organisation

Why circular economy matters for your business

Adopting circular practices isn’t just about sustainability, it’s a strategic move that can strengthen your organisation by:

  • Reducing waste disposal fees and reliance on expensive virgin materials
  • Improving resilience by sourcing materials locally and reducing exposure to global supply chain disruptions
  • Unlocking value by turn by-products into useful inputs or revenue streams
  • Meet ESG goals by reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental performance
  • Staying competitive by aligning with growing customer and regulatory expectations

Practical steps you can start today

You don’t need a major transformation programme to get started. Many businesses can begin with simple, actionable steps:

Map your waste and resource streams

Understand what materials you generate, discard or underutilise.

Identify reuse opportunities

Ask:

  • Can this material be reused internally?
  • Could another business use it as a raw material?
  • Is there a higher-value recycling option available?

Collaborate across sectors

The biggest opportunities often lie outside your immediate industry. Projects like the WMRRN help connect businesses with complementary needs to find better solutions for waste and by-products

Rethink procurement

Consider switching to:

  • Recycled or secondary materials
  • Locally sourced products
  • Suppliers offering take-back or circular solutions

Track and communicate impact

Measure cost savings, waste reduction and carbon benefits. This not only supports reporting but also demonstrates value internally and to customers.

How the WMRRN can help

The West Midlands Resource Reuse Network works directly with businesses to:

  • Match waste outputs with new uses
  • Connect organisations across sectors
  • Identify cost-saving and carbon reduction opportunities
  • Support the development of circular supply chains

Whether you’re a manufacturer, SME or large organisation, WMRRN can help you turn waste into a resource and risk into opportunity. It’s an ideal starting point for businesses looking to embed circular thinking without significant upfront investment.

Getting started

By taking small, practical steps and tapping into regional support like the WMRRN and Circular Economy Literacy Training, organisations can unlock real commercial value while contributing to a more sustainable West Midlands.
